Karume leads SADC Electoral Mission in Mozambique
Former Zanzibar president Amani Abeid Karume arrived in Mozambique on Monday to lead the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observer Mission (SEOM).
Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is also the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, has appointed Karume to head the mission.
Dr Amani Abeid Karume was appointed Head of Mission for SEOM Mozambique on September 25 by the Chairperson in accordance with Article 8 of the SADC Principles and Guidelines, and the SADC Secretariat was mandated to coordinate the mission, including facilitating the deployment of observers.
The mission will be officially launched tomorrow in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, by Mr Karume.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr Karume will meet with a range of stakeholders, including the Mozambique Electoral Commission (CNE), SADC ambassadors, political parties, civil society organizations, religious institutions, and media representatives.
As part of the statement, Karume will provide a preliminary report on the mission following the completion of the electoral process on October 11.
On polling day, the SEOM will assess the conduct of the election in accordance with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections. The SEOM will be deployed throughout the country’s provinces.
As a result of these guidelines, citizens are encouraged to participate in democracy and development, political violence, intimidation and intolerance are prevented, and equal access to state media is promoted for all political parties, ensuring all citizens have access to election-related information.
